800 2014 CATS C2 (C UW Wiedemeyer) 038St. Lucia is located 13°43’ and 14°07’ North latitude and 60°05’ West longitude. It is approximately 616 km² in area, roughly 22.5km in width and 43km in length. The island is very rugged with steep mountains and valleys. Mt. Gimie is the highest peak on the island at a height of 950m. St. Lucia is volcanic in origin, with an active volcano located in Soufriere in the South West of the Island. St. Lucia is geologically young and is dominated by andesite, rhyolite and basaltic rocks. St. Lucia’s soils are largely made up by montmorrillonitic clays in the coastal areas and latosolic clays higher up in the watersheds.
